Note: At the AGM held at Wharton Conservative Club on Tuesday, 13th March, 2010 a motion was passed stating:
"That the requirement of a day permit to fish on Top Flash should be ceased for the season 2010 - 2011".
Members are now permitted to fish this water without the need for a special day permit from the commencement of the season 2010
from times and dates as specified in the 2010 - 2011 Membership Card.

Background

This area of open water was created by salt being washed out of underlying rock and the subsequent collapse of the overlying rock. This was due to intensive salt mining and brine extraction that started around the mid 18th century. The subsequent "hole in the ground" above water was filled by the River Weaver overflowing its banks and there it is - an instant lake of approximately 12 acres!

Lots of work has gone on over the years to prevent the fish from swimming into the river when water levels are high. Although it doesn't always work it does have some effect. A large wall of tyres was built nearly 10 years ago, which has now silted up and works as a barrier to prevent the fish escaping.

Top Flash has been leased by the Association for over 60 years. It received a stocking of around a dozen carp from the Ocean in the 60's that settled in and bred well. In 1974, 750 small carp were purchased from Avon Fishery's, Colonel Thompson (the owner of Avon Fisheries) personally drove the fish in plastic bags to the Flash and along with the fisheries manager stocked the lake. Obviously these fish have since bred and it is believed that one or two of the originals still survive today, albeit a little heavier.

Unfortunately Top Flash is probably the Winsford water that receives the most unwanted attention. Lots of myths surround this venue and because of these and a minority of anglers selfish behaviour the rules to fish here are somewhat stricter than for our other waters. Please be mindful of all the rules - it is unlikely you will be given a second chance if you are caught breaking any of them.
