This area of open water was created by salt being washed out of underlying rock
and the subsequent collapse of the overlying rock. This was due to intensive salt
mining and brine extraction that started around the mid 18th century. The
subsequent "hole in the ground" above water was filled by the river Weaver
overflowing its banks and there it is - an instant lake of approximately 12 acres!
A large wall of tyres was built some ago, which has now silted up and works as a
barrier to prevent the fish escaping.
The river which flows alongside the Flash contains quality chub, roach, dace and
perch and is always a handy spot to "drop on" if the Flash is out of sorts.
Top Flash is the water of legends and contains carp to 40lbs, many of which
are pictured on this page. The water also contains large shoals of bream, specimen
tench, roach, rudd and double figure pike. In addition to the traditional species, the
shoals of large bream and roach are also starting to produce hybrids. Any angler
who has ever visited Ireland will be well aware of the fighting qualities of these fish.
Feeder fishing on this water regularly produces bags of over 80lbs
which is a good standard for any water in the UK.
Unfortunately Top Flash is probably the Winsford water that receives the most
unwanted attention. Lots of myths surround this venue and because of these and a
minority of anglers' selfish behaviour the rules to fish here are somewhat stricter than
for our other waters. Please be mindful of all the rules - you will not be given a second
chance if you are caught breaking any of them!
Night fishing is now allowed on this water subject to special conditions.
